St Johns Golf and Country Club

An early downpour delayed our start by about a half an hour and restricted our play to cart paths only.  Other than that is was a very enjoyable day at St Johns.  The course was in good shape with fast greens which rolled true.  The food was great and the scorecards and scoreboards were perfect.

The St Johns course was set up pretty easy at a slope of 116.  The greens were soft due to the rain and we shot the lowest average score of the year at 86.7.  However the average points at 36.1 was only the third highest of the year.  Here are all the year's results so far with the highest and lowest average gross score and points highlighted:

Month Crs Avg Scr Avg Pts
Feb MP 89.6 36.2
Mar OC 89.3 35.8
Apr EH 88.7 37.1
May PV 89.8 33.3
Jun HH 91.0 34.4
Jul DC 89.2 34.3
Aug SN 87.6 36.0
Sep ML 88.6 34.9
Oct SJ 86.7 36.1

We only had three changes to the rosters after they were submitted for this match.  That is very good!

Thanks for all the after-match scoring help at St Johns. Those who helped were Roy Gulick (MP), Larry Von Dolteren (SN), John Pujol (QH), Glenn Dobrick (SG), Bob White (SJ), Jerry Menne (SJ), and Gene Pottenger (SJ).

WINNERS:

St Johns, the host club, took first place with a score of 278 points.  SJ was led by 46 points from Charles Jenks and 43 points from Bob White.  St Johns is a rapidly improving team that has become a force to be reckoned with.  This year they were in 12th place in the Brady Cup standings after the May match, 9th after the July match, 6th after the September match and third after the October match! JG and SN.... you had better watch your tail.....

Hidden Hills with a score of 271 was second place.  HH was led by Larry Dismore's 43 point performance and another 41 points from Malcolm Champion.

Third place was taken by Marsh Landing with a score of 269.  They were led by 45 points from Lanny Benson and 41 points from Bill Miller.

Orange Park, with a score of 266 was fourth.  OP was led by 46 points from Jim Brindle and 43 from Bob Hubbard.

There are only 2 matches left in the 2008 season.  However, in the last match all points are doubled so that is like 3 more matches to go.  JG seems to have a lock on the Cup but anything can happen.  If SN, SJ or SG get hot and JG takes a tumble.... who knows what the outcome will be.

    Closest to the pin winners:
           #3   Denny Hurst (MP)
           #
5   Jim Brindle (OP)
           #13 Mark Good (DC)
           #17 Odie Skeen (MC)

BESTS:

Eagle 2: #1, par 4, Bill Gesdorf (JG)
Eagle 3:
#2, par 5, Tom Wallon (HH)

Lowest gross score: 70 Jerry Glowe (JG)

Highest point total: 46 Charles Jenks (SJ)
                                     46 Jim Brindle (OP)
                                     46 Gary Dake (MP)
                                     46 Phil Wallace (QH)

The complete listing of scores is here.

SCORECARDS

Everyone turned in a scorecard after the match. Most of the scorecards were filled in perfectly and were very legible.  We did have a few with "X"s on them and a few with overwritten scores which were difficult to read.  In the latter cases we gave the highest number that we saw.  Be aware of these two problems when you sign your card.  There were also a few cards without two signatures.

SCORING:

We made only one error at the scoring table this month! That one was corrected thanks to the player's honesty and his reporting the error to us.  These computer scorer guys deserve a great deal of credit for what they do and how well they do it.  These guys are GOOD!

NEXT MONTH

Marsh Creek Country Club, Monday, November 3, 2008, 9:00 am shotgun start.

BRADY CUP PLANNING

In the past it has been our practice to solicit donated door prizes for the awards ceremony after the season ending Brady Cup match.  The reason for the prizes was to hold the crowd to see the winners receive the Brady Cup.  Since the prizes were donated, we limited winners to players in the field that day.  We also stipulated that in order to win a door prize you must be present for the drawing.

This year, things are different.  For each match that you play in, you are contributing one dollar to the general fund which will be used to buy door prizes for this years match.  It would hardly be fair to limit the winners to those playing that day.

So this year, for each dollar that you contributed to the fund, you will have one ticket in the drawing.  i.e. If you played 5 times you get 5 chances to win.....  10 times and you get 10 chances.

You must still be present to win the prize.  We will invite all non-participants that day to come by after the match and after lunch to buy a beer (if we have enough money, maybe we can spring for a keg or two), watch the awards, and have a chance at winning a nice prize.

Initial plans for prizes are: (subject to change)

      1) $700 gift certificate for (see below)
      2) $100 gift certificate to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse
      3) $100 gift certificate to the Bonefish Grill
      4) $100 gift certificate to Sterlings of Avondale
      5) Dozen Pro V1 (TPC Logo)
      6) Dozen Pro V1 (TPC Logo)

      7) Dozen Pro V1 (TPC Logo)

By the way, we will still accept donated prizes but we won't twist your arm quite as much this year.

My original plan was to buy a $700 certificate at Amelia Island Plantation.  But it looks like a certificate of that size would buy much more time and golf in North Carolina.... say at Lake Lure which is about 6-1/2 hours driving time from Jacksonville.  Think about which option you would prefer and let your team rep know your opinion.  I will be asking the Team Reps to vote on this issue before long.

I am sure that you all see or hear things at our matches that would be of interest to us all.  Funny stories about things that happen on the course.  They don't have to be the absolute truth!  Brag about a great hole you played or a great shot you hit.  Here again, you may stretch the truth.  Write them up and send them to me.  It would make this a much more interesting publication.  Please help out.  Surely someone out there has an opinion or suggestion for the Interclub.
