Deerwood Country Club
John Brady Cup Match

THE DAY

It was a nice day at Deerwood. The weather started out very cold but by tee time it had warmed up nicely.  The course was in great shape and the greens were extremely fast.  The food was good and the scorecards and scoreboards were perfect.

2008 CHAMPIONS

This was our John Brady Cup match.  The defending champions from Jacksonville Golf & CC took the Cup for the 3rd time in the past four years.  We tip our hats to them.  They are very worthy Champions.  We must all elevate our games if we expect to stop this dynasty.  A picture of the champions may be viewed by clicking the thumbnail below......

ROSTERS & SCORING

We had six changes to the rosters after they were submitted for this match.  That is higher than average but there seemed to be some sickness going around and one poor fellow had an accident.

Thanks for all the after-match scoring help. Those who helped were Roy Gulick (MP), Larry Von Dolteren (SN), Glenn Dobrick (SG), John Pujol (QH), Joe Power (EH), Greg Howard (EH), and Gary Owensby (EH).

PRIZES GALORE

There were 690 tickets in the drawing bowl for the door prizes.  It seemed that Marsh Landing and Hidden Hills made out very well in the drawing, both being drawn several times.  Believe me, those tickets were scrambled very well.  The were even cut and folded in a random fashion.  Then they were mixed and stirred several times.  They were shaken and stirred more even as they were being drawn.  Randomness just doesn't always turn out as random as one would like.

I would like to find a better method to use next year.  One that everyone would be comfortable with.  The method used this year was very time consuming to cut and fold that many name slips.  If anyone knows a better method, I am certainly open for suggestions.

Lots of prizes were given away at this event including $960 of merchandise certificates to be used at Deerwood, our usual proximity prizes, a prize for most points scored, a prize for fewest points scored, and 20 door prizes.

Ed Welsh (HH) was the winner of the $800 gift certificate to be used at Fairfield Mountain Resort in Lake Lure, NC.

Dave Spring (MC) suggested that I estimate the value of the prizes that were given away at this match.  Each round of golf was conservatively estimated to be worth $50.  Some are worth a lot more than that and some a little less but I think that is a fair number.  With that in mind, the total value of all prizes was $5220.

MATCH WINNERS:

For the second month in a row, March Creek took first place withscore of 261 points.  MC was led by 41 points from Dave Spring and 40 points from each of Bruce Brown and Gerry Stevens.  Marsh Creek took the top spot 3 times this year, that is more than any other team.

St Johns with a score of 242 was second place.  SJ was led by Mile Millspaugh's 38 point performance and another 37 points from both Mike McCormick and Gene Pottenger.  St Johns finished in the top four teams for the season for the first time.

Third place was taken by Marsh Landing (3 months in a row) with a score of 240.  They were led by 41 points from Rich Ezequelle and 36 points from George Halvorsen.  Marsh Landing finished 2nd for the season, their highest finish ever.

San Jose, with a score of 239 was fourth.  SN was led by
37 points from both Mike Cooper and Don Mathis and 36 from Victor Zambetti.  San Jose finished 3rd for the season and that is their personal best.

SCORECARDS

Everyone turned in a scorecard after the match. Most of the scorecards were filled in perfectly and were very legible.  There were a few 'X's on a couple of cards.

About 5 cards had only one signature.  We had to page the players to get their signature.

SCORING:

We made several errors at the scoring table this month! We awarded three prizes to the wrong winners.  It is unusual for us to perform that poorly.  We are working on the problems.  Do not lose faith in us, we normally do great job.

One thing YOU can do to help us is to check your score on the scoreboard.  If you suspect something is wrong, please report it to us.  We are always more than happy to 're-input' cards through our system.  If you notice an error and don't report it, it is just as dishonest as cheating on the course.  Remember, what goes around, comes around.

NEXT MONTH

Jacksonville Golf & CC, Monday, January 12, 2009, 9:00 am shotgun start.  This is the season kick-off match for 2009.  JG is a great place to start the season.

We need proximity prizes for the 2009 season.  If anyone has anything to donate, let me or Roy Gulick know about it.

I am sure that you all see or hear things at our matches that would be of interest to us all.  Funny stories about things that happen on the course.  They don't have to be the absolute truth!  Brag about a great hole you played or a great shot you hit.  Here again, you may stretch the truth.  Write them up and send them to me.  It would make this a much more interesting publication.  Please help out.  Surely someone out there has an opinion or suggestion for the Interclub.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all MSIS players and their families!
