January 2008

To all MSIS Addressees,

We had a perfect weather day for the John Brady Cup match at Deerwood.  The course was in great shape and the greens were fast.  The course probably set up a little short for us but in accordance with our rules, the tees closest to 6000 yards were selected.  The short course would have been perfect had the weather been cold and blustery like it can be in January.  Lunch was good and the scorecards and scoreboards were good.

Thanks to all the people who helped out at Deerwood.  That includes Scott Grospitch (Head Pro), Glenn Dobrick, John Pujol, Gary Owensby, Greg Howard, and Ray Fox.

WINNERS: Brady Cup

Jacksonville Golf and Country Club (JG&CC) won the 2007 Championship and will hold the John Brady Cup until December 2008 when we have the next Brady Cup match.  This was the 2nd time in the past 3 years that JG&CC has won the cup.  JG&CC did it with a very strong finish the past two months.  By taking 2nd and 3rd those two months they were able to overcome Orange Park's large lead and beat them by two points for the entire season.  Wow!  That was close!

Playing this match for JG&CC were Bob Curry, Wayne St Clair, Skip Lunsford, Jim Trado, Rick Cottey, Ray Fox, Al Boyce, and Wib Finch.  Others who played for JG&CC in 2007 and helped win this championship: Bill Emminger, Rod Fullerton, Bill Gesdorf, Tim Mylod, Jim White, Bill Devine, Marvin Harris, Larry Jordan, Frank Di Graci, Russell Sell, John Darin, and Jerry Glowe.  You may see a picture of the winning team by clicking here.

SCORECARDS

The cards were very good, but there were couple of scoring errors due to poor legibility.

SCORING:

We tried something new this month.  Only two computers were working the scorecards.  The third computer was doing the totaling for us.  It was particularly helpful in this Brady Cup match as it doubled the points and gave us the season totals.  We had a few hitches but not too bad.

If it works well, we will use it from now on.  We will still have a manually prepared scoreboard, but we will provide the totals.  The new spreadsheet totals the best 7 scores, gives the lowest score in the field to no-shows, and does the tie breaker for us.  I would like your opinion on this change which we will use for a few more months at least.

ARTICLES

Articles of interest to MSIS members are accepted and will be published in this report.  Just email your article to me.  You must sign it.

I am sure that you all see or hear things at our matches that would be of interest to us all.  Funny stories about things that happen on the course.  They don't have to be the absolute truth!  Brag about a great hole you played or a great shot you hit.  Here again, you may stretch the truth.  Write them up and send them to me.  It would make this a much more interesting publication.
