August 2008

It was a great day at San Jose and lots of good scores were made.  The course was in wonderful shape with fast greens which rolled true.  The food was great and the scorecards and scoreboards were right on.

We only had one change to the rosters after they were submitted for this match.  That is EXCELLENT!  Everyone showed up on time and everyone turned in a scorecard.  A perfect day.

Thanks for all the help at San Jose.  Those who helped were Roy Gulick (MP), Larry Von Dolteren (SN), Jack Garrity (EH), Evans Sumner (SN), Doug Alred (SN) and Don Mathis (SN).

WINNERS:

    1. Magnolia Point, took first place with a score of 280 points.  MP was led by 45 points from Conrad Beaver (Conrad makes a habit of doing this every so often) and 42 points from Gary Hoagland.  MP brought in a new player this month; Bob Barclay is his name.  Bob managed to win two of the four proximity prizes on his way to shooting a neat little 71.

2St Johns was second with 277 points.  SJ was led by Gene Pottenger's 45 point performance. Support came from Don Rader with 41 points.

    3. Third place was taken by World Golf Village, with 276 points.  WG was led by 51 points from Steve McBride.  51 points is only 3 shy of the record.  Nice round Steve.  Jim Hutchison kicked in 44 points to help the WG team take 3rd place.

    4. The host team from San Jose was 4th by winning the tie-breaker over Hidden Hills.  SN scored 274 points. They were led by Doug Dickey who had 46 points.  Also, Doug Alred had 44 points.

The top teams in the 2008 standings had a poor showing this month allowing several of the teams in the middle of the pack to tighten things up a bit.

There are only 4 matches left in the 2008 season.  However, the in last match all points are doubled so that is like 5 more matches to go.  It is time for everyone to make their move if they have one!

    Closest to the pin winners:
#5   Bob Barclay (MP) 14' 9" (missed putt)
           #8
Ray Mantle (QH) 0' 1" (made putt)
#12 Conrad Beaver (MP) 1' 1-1/2" (made putt)
#15 Bob Barclay (MP) 12' 5" (missed putt)

BESTS:

Eagle: Jerry Meyer (OP), 2 on the par 4 #14.  Driver and sand wedge from 50 yards

Lowest gross score: 71 Bob Barclay (MP)
Highest point total: 51 Steve McBride (WG)

SCORECARDS

The scorecards were very good this month.  There were only a few cards where legibility was an issue.

SCORING:

We made NO errors at the scoring table this month! These guys deserve a great deal of credit for what they do and how well they do it.  These guys are GOOD!

General Remarks

Disappointing results. Not much change from one year ago.  The Handicap System relies on every player’s integrity in posting all his scores with the correct supporting data.  43% failed to post their score.  For those who did post, their collective data entry was generally poor.  Only about half of the posted entries were correct as to score, date, course rating, and slope.

 Action

Team Reps should encourage their players to post complete and accurate Tournament Scores.

BRADY CUP PLANNING

In the past it has been our practice to solicit donated door prizes for the awards ceremony after the season ending Brady Cup match.  The reason for the prizes was to hold a decent sized crowd to see the winners receive the Brady Cup.  Since the prizes were donated, we limited winners to players in the field that day.  We also stipulated that in order to win a door prize you must be present for the drawing.

This year, things are different.  For each match that you play in, you are contributing one dollar to the general fund which will be used to buy door prizes for this years match.  It would hardly be fair to limit the winners to those playing that day.

So this year, for each dollar that you contributed to the fund, you will have one ticket in the drawing.  i.e. If you played 5 times you get 5 chances to win.....  10 times and you get 10 chances.

You must still be present to win the prize.  We will invite all non-participants that day to come by after the match and after lunch to buy a beer (if we have enough money, maybe we can spring for a keg or two), watch the awards, and have a chance at winning a nice prize.

Initial plans for prizes are: (subject to change)

      1) $700 gift certificate for Amelia Island Plantation
      2) $100 gift certificate to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse
      3) $100 gift certificate to the Wine Cellar
      4) $100 gift certificate to Sterlings of Avondale
      5) Dozen Pro V1 (TPC Logo)
      6) Dozen Pro V1 (TPC Logo)

      7) Dozen Pro V1 (TPC Logo)

By the way, we will still accept donated prizes but we won't twist your arm quite as much this year.

I am sure that you all see or hear things at our matches that would be of interest to us all.  Funny stories about things that happen on the course.  They don't have to be the absolute truth!  Brag about a great hole you played or a great shot you hit.  Here again, you may stretch the truth.  Write them up and send them to me.  It would make this a much more interesting publication.  Please help out.  Surely someone out there has an opinion or suggestion for the Interclub.
