JUNE 2009

MATCH DAY

A good day at King & Bear..... but it was a little hot and muggy.... and the greens were a little bumpy due to transition problems.  That is to be expected this time of year.  We had 120 players for the match.

AND THE WINNERS WERE:

The home team, World Golf Village took first place with a score of 284.  Not to take anything away from these guy just because they were playing at home.  I played with Jock, and he just played extremely well.  It had nothing to do with local knowledge.  WG was led by Jock Ochiltree with 48 points, Hank Brown with 47 points, Dave Sowersby with 45 points and Jack Tarr with 40 points.  These guys were due to win one!  They have lots of talent.

Osprey Cove took second place with a score of 274.  OC was led by Jeff Ewell with 48 points and with another 40 points from both Don Conradi and Frank Quinby.

Third place was taken by St Johns with a score of 271.  They were led by 41 points from both Mike Millspaugh and Jerry Menne.  Also, Mike McCormick kicked in with a nice 40 point performance.

Sawgrass, with a score of 270 was fourth.  SG was led by 45 points from Glenn Dobrick and another 43 points from Tom Kraft.  Sawgrass appears to be serious contenders for the Cup this year as they have finished in the money in every 2009 match!

Don't look back but that tough team from Jacksonville G&CC is creeping up in the standings.  We'll all have to play well to beat them, that is for sure.

Speaking of closest to the pin,  we are just about out of prizes.  A few clubs have been very generous with prizes.  HELP!  We do not have enough prizes for next month!!!

The complete listing of scores is here.

SCORECARDS

You guys did a very good job with the cards this month.  The best I have seen.  I have no complaints.

We need to remember to NEVER stroke control a score.  If a player holes out, give him what he took, even if it is ridiculously high.  If a player does not hole out, give him a zero (0)!  Our computers do all the stroke controlling.  If you do stroke control a score, a player may get points where he doesn't deserve any.

SCORING

Thanks for all the help with the post-match scoring at King & Bear.  Those who helped were Roy Gulick (MP), Mark Good (DC), Glenn Dobrick (SG), Jock Ochiltree (WG), George Slavin (WG), Sid Halsey (WG) and Jack Tarr (WG).

HELP WANTED

Due to the ravages of time, there is a need for new people to step up and take the reins of the Men's Senior Interclub.  Roy Gulick and I need some relief and rest.

Roy needs someone to take of the Scheduling and PR tasks.  Roy has everything pretty much automated so that someone can step right in and go to work.  Give Roy a call at 904-284-2296 for more details.

My tasks are automated too.  And they can be broken into several pieces.  Some examples:

  • Do the pre-match ground work
    • Email Team Reps to decide the tees
    • Talk to host pro, to find out when the pairings are needed
    • Email match requirements to host pro
    • Email Roster Notification to team reps
  • Solicit volunteers for post-match scoring
  • Solicit proximity prizes
  • Gather and organize team rosters
  • Assign handicaps where needed
  • Add new players to database
  • Do the pairings
  • Send pairings to host club
  • Add pairings to web site
  • Prepare flash drives with post-match scoring programs
  • Post-match tasks
    • Input all scores and points to database
    • Create Daily Results lists and compare to scoreboard pictures/spreadsheet
    • Fix discrepancies
    • Update standings spreadsheet
    • Update handicap indexes
    • Audit scorecards
    • Add new indexes and results to web pages
    • Send thank you note to host club
  • Prepare monthly newsletter

Tools I use extensively: Microsoft Word, Excel, Scorekeeper and Note Tab Lite.

Which piece would you like to tackle?

An easy one for someone to take off my hands would be this monthly newsletter.  How about you?  Can you help?  We have lots of new youngsters in MSIS.  Surely there is lots of talent and willingness out there somewhere.  Please help!

  Just call 904-564-2182

WEB SITE

All players should sign up for MSIS emails.  There is a sign-up form near the bottom of the home page at www.jaxsi.org with electronic submittal....... very easy.

There is lots of information on this web site.  Many of your questions are answered on the site.  Please look it over.

We have two local sponsors of these web pages.  The ad for Lewis Blinn, Contractor on the home page and Jock Ochiltree's ad on the April results page

Jock is one of our continuing web page sponsors.  He has added a new feature to his ad.  Each month he is going to provide statistics and feature a house on the market in the community located near our  tournament site.  Check it out.  Just click on his ad where it says "Click here”.

Lewis 'Tex' Blinn is one of our players.  He is also a very good contractor ready to serve your remodeling needs.  Please give him a try.

Remember, keeping our sponsors happy adds money to our prize fund.  Keep Jock happy by looking at his featured home.  This month's homes are fabulous!  Not ready to buy? Call Tex Blinn for your remodeling needs.

SUBMIT AN ARTICLE

Articles of interest to MSIS members are accepted and will be published here.  Just email your article to me.  You must sign it.

I am sure that you all see or hear things at our matches that would be of interest to us all.  Funny stories about things that happen on the course.  They don't have to be the absolute truth!  Brag about a great hole you played or a great shot you hit.  Here again, you may stretch the truth.  Write them up and send them to me.  It would make this a much more interesting publication.  Please help out.  Surely someone out there has an opinion or suggestion for the Interclub.
