SEPTEMBER (1) 2009

MATCH DAY

Perfect weather and a perfect golf course greeted us at Sawgrass.  The greens were very fast but they were smooth as a pool table. We had 120 players for the match.  I heard no complaints from any of them.

AND THE WINNERS WERE:

With four matches (5 team scores) to go in the season, we have a very tight race for the Cup.  Sawgrass has opened a comfortable lead but Hidden Hills is only 34 points back, Eagle Harbor 41 points back and that pesky team from Jax Golf & CC is looming in 4th placeat 57 points behind the leaders.  At a minimum, the top 6 or 7 teams have a good shot at winning this thing.  Others are not mathematically eliminated, but they are long shots.  Don't forget, the last match of the season is played for twice as many points so a lot of ground can be gained on the leaders!  In the final match, the leaders will be paired together.

Marsh Landing took first place with a modest score score of 249.  That reflects how difficult this course can be. ML was led by Team Rep, John Arnold with 41 points and George Halvorsen with 39 points.  With this win, ML is keeping their hopes for a Brady Cup Championship alive.  They are only 67 points behind the leaders.  Closing that gap is very doable with 5 more match inputs to go in 2009.

The host team, Sawgrass, took second place with a score of 247. Continued strong play by SG moved them into first place in the race for the Brady Cup.  These guys are for real having finished in the money in 7 out of the 8 matches this year.  SG was led by Charles Romain with 42 points and by another 41 points from both Dennis McCarthy.

Third place was taken by San Jose with a score of 246.  SN was led by 39 points from both Doug Dickey and Steve Vining.

Ponte Vedra, with a score of 232 was fourth.  PV was led by 36 points from each Jim Bryce and Mike Peacock.

SCORECARDS

You players did a very good job with the cards this month.  I only audited 1/2 of the cards but it appeared that the legibility was good and I spotted no Xs on the cards.

We need to remember to NEVER stroke control a score.  If a player holes out, give him what he took, even if it is ridiculously high.  If a player does not hole out, give him a zero (0)!  Our computers do all the stroke controlling.  If you do stroke control a score, a player may get points where he doesn't deserve them.

SCORING

The scoring committee did an good job this month, but we did make a few errors and I want to thank you all for reporting errors when you think something is amiss.  All errors were corrected except for one.  The correct teams were awarded the prizes.

Thanks for all the help with the post-match scoring at Sawgrass.  Those who helped were Larry Dismore (HH), Dennis McCarthy (SG), Glenn Dobrick (SG), Bob Hubbard (OP), Tom Petrie (SG) and Bill Swerbenski (SG).

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: None

Does anyone have any ideas about prizes for the John Brady Cup match in December?

I am sure that you all see or hear things at our matches that would be of interest to us all.   Funny stories about things that happen on the course.  They don't have to be the absolute truth!  Brag about a great hole you played or a great shot you hit.  Here again, you may stretch the truth. You may make a complaint of a suggestion.

Write anything up and send it me.  It would make this a much more interesting publication.  Please help out.  Surely everyone out there has an opinion or suggestion for the Interclub.
