January 2010

MATCH DAY

Well what do we expect in January?  It was hot and humid.  Not!  How about cold?  Yep!  After several weather delays we were finally allowed to tee off about 11 am.  After a few holes, it warmed up nicely and the weather was well suited to winter time golf.

All 15 teams and 120 players were there for this event.

It was another very nice day at San Jose.  Great course in fine condition followed by a wonderful meal.  What more can we ask for?

THE BATTLE FOR THE CUP:

Jacksonville Golf & CC: This team is off to another fast start.  Look out, they never let up and they have a home match this year!  JG took first place with a score of 255.  They were led by 40 points from Bill Gesdorf and 38 points from Russell Sell.

Marsh Creek, took second place with a score of 254, just one point back of the winners.  MC was led by 42 points from Odie Skeen and 39 points from Sonny Hubbs.

Third place was taken by Ponte Vedra with a score of 251.  PV was led by 42 points from Al Stevens and 41 points from Jim Bryce.

ANNUAL TEAM REPS MEETING

On January 7th, 2010 the annual meeting of our Team Representatives was held at Eagle Harbor.  Roy Gulick was the Facilitator of the meeting and in my opinion it was very productive.  You may read the minutes of the meeting by clicking here.

USGA vs MSIS indexes:

One of the things that we often discuss at Team Reps meetings is whether or not we should use USGA indexes at our matches in lieu of MSIS indexes.  So far we have decided to continue using MSIS indexes.

How much difference is there in the two indexes?  Here is a chart that quantifies the difference.

The chart uses the indexes of our players at Deerwood.  All player USGA indexes were taken from the Internet (col 3) and converted to Deerwood handicaps (col 4).  Those handicaps were then compared to the handicaps (col 2) calculated using the MSIS index (col 1).  Column 5 shows the difference.  If the MSIS handicap is higher than the USGA handicap, it is shown in black.  Otherwise it is shown in red.

Strangely enough, some players actually have a higher USGA handicap that they do an MSIS handicap.  As much as 5 strokes in one instance.  However, going the other way, most players get many more strokes using their MSIS index.  Eleven more in one instance.

On the average, a player gets 2.3 more strokes using an MSIS index than he does using his USGA index.  That comes out to 18 extra stokes for a team.  So, if the stats are any good, a team playing at home has an 18 point advantage over the competition.  What do you think?

Give me some feed back and we'll publish your comments here next month.

HOME TEAM ADVANTAGE:

We have all known for a long time that the home team has an advantage in MSIS matches.  The chart mentioned above shows how much that advantage is and here is a chart that quantifies the results of that advantage.

The chart (col 2) shows the results for the home team of all 'regular season' matches from March 2006 thru November 2009.  The second column shows where the home team finished from 1 to 15.  By colors 1st is red, 2nd is blue, 3rd is green and 4th is yellow.

At the bottom the figures show that the average finish for the home team is 3.452 while the average finish of all teams is 8.0 .  Duh!  An 18 stroke advantage is a pretty good head start.  No?

Column 3 shows where the home team would have finished, in those same matches, had we subtracted 18 from their score.  They would have had an average finish of 8.119.  That is more like it.  Perhaps an 18 point deduction is too much.  What do you think?

Give me some feed back and we'll publish your comments here next month.

SCORECARDS

Your scorecards were good this month although there were a few legibility problems.  Remember, you are personally responsible for your card even though someone else kept your score.

Always remember too that you should NEVER pick-up on a hole until you have reached your maximum ESC score AND you can no longer score a point.  For speed of play reasons, always pick-up at that point and enter a zero on the scorecard.

SCORING

The scoring committee did an excellent job this month, making only two errors!  That is fantastic when you consider the amount of data that they handle and all of the commotion around us as we work.

Both of the errors were caught in my audit here at home.  Thankfully, neither error affected the winners of any prizes.  All errors have been corrected in the database and the standings are now official.

Much thanks to all of you who helped with the scoring at San Jose.  Those who worked were Larry Von Dolteren SN, Glenn Dobrick SG, Joe Power EH, Mike Cooper SN, John Pujol QH, Lamar Drake SN, Richard Sundberg SN, and Bob French SN.

WEB SITE

I am experiencing some problems getting email through to those of you with Hotmail accounts.  Microsoft has tightened up their spam controls to an almost unreasonable level.  Out of the 5 billion messages sent to Hotmail addresses daily, as much as 4.5 billion are spam. These mind boggling statistics have led Hotmail to turn up the dials on their SmartScreen filtering technology with the effect of also routinely blocking legitimate email.  You may need to make sure I am on your 'allow' list.

All players should sign up for MSIS emails.  There is a sign-up form near the bottom of the home page at www.jaxsi.org with electronic submittal....... very easy.

We have two local sponsors of these web pages.  The ad for Lewis Blinn, Contractor on the home page and Jock Ochiltree's ad on the January results page

Lewis 'Tex' Blinn is one of our players.  He is also a very good contractor ready to serve your remodeling needs.  Please give him a try.

Jock is one of our continuing web page sponsors.  Each month Jock provides statistics and feature a house on the market in the community located near our  tournament site.  Check it out.  Just click on his ad where it says "Click here”.
