TODAY'S VENUE

It was especially pleasing to find signs (below) to guide us throughout Marsh Landing's clubhouse. Thanks to Rob Kohlhaas, PGA, Director of Golf and to Blair Gibson, PGA, Head Professional for adding a nice touch to everything else they did in hosting a superbly executed event.

The action was sharpened by agreeable weather, fine companions, and a well-conditioned course. The combination produced 67 birdies and two eagles, including a hole-in-one at number 7 by Paul Berent (HH) with a 7-Iron from 139 yards.

It was a big moving day for two member clubs. Jacksonville jumped seven rungs on the season's ladder, from 10th place to 3rd on the strength of today's third-place finish. Marsh Landing, today's going-in favorite as host club, took first place and climbed six rungs on the season's ladder, from 12th place to 6th.

San Jose and Magnolia Point continued to hold onto first place and second place, respectively. And seventh place on the season is a four-way tie among Deer Creek, Hidden Hills, Osprey Cove, and World Golf. Which club is going to bust out of that pack next month? Each of them is just thirty points behind our leader, San Jose.

THE SHAKY LADDER

Here's a summary of how our top four teams fared in this month's competition.

Marsh Landing Country Club

With the home-team advantage and 292 points to boot, Captain John Arnold's team snagged first place by a huge 24-point margin. Seven quota-busting scores were headed by Bill Miller's field-topping 48 points against 858:1 odds. Add four 40-plus scores to understand how Marsh Landing boosted itself up six places on the season.

Jacksonville Golf & Country Club

With 268 points, Captain Skip Lunsford's team slipped into second place by a five-point margin and bounced up seven places on the season's ladder to a third-place perch. Jacksonville was propelled by Frank Di Graci with 46 points against 425:1 odds and a pair of 40-plus performances from Rick Cottey and Bill Gesdorf.

San Jose Country Club

With 263 points, Captain Bill Basney's team eased into third place by a two-point margin, holding onto first place for the season. Tom Donovan was the team's "top dawg" at 43 points while Captain Bill nipped at his heels with 41 points.

Magnolia Point Golf & Country Club

With 261 points, Captain Roy Gulick and his team grabbed fourth place by an 11-point margin over the next-best team in today's field. Jim Cardozo carded 41 points while the team was the most consistent in the field with a spread of 1.9 points, edging Queen's Harbour (2.0) by a smidgin.

DIFFICULTY RELATIVE TO PAR

The course gave us a break today: 89 pickups were recorded, one each on holes 5 and 7! If you recall, we had 63 pickups at St. Johns in April, 187 at Deercreek in March, 159 at Hidden Hills in January, and 225 at Ponte Vedra Inn in December. At this rate, you can expect 34 pickups at the Slammer & Squire. I'd rather opt out of that stat!

You expect to get strokes on holes where you most need them but those are not necessarily the most difficult holes.

MSIS MEMBER PROFILE

This month we continue a project revived two months ago when we profiled Bill Swerbenski, who has been a Course Ratings volunteer with the Florida State Golf Association. You can view his profile at Swerbo (SG).

This month's profile features Ray Mantle (below), who is a Rules volunteer with the Florida State Golf Assn. as well. Ray's law credentials are a great fit with FSGA's needs. You can view his profile at Mantle (QH).

Having profiled two FSGA volunteers, we'd like to identify other MSIS players who serve the game of golf as course raters, rules officials, tournament committee, or volunteers in junior golf or similar programs. In particular, let us know of members who volunteer with the Golf Association of Florida or the Georgia State Golf Association.

ARTICLES SOLICITED

Come on! Submit an idea or material for an article that might interest your fellow-competitors. Surely you've seen or heard something interesting during an MSIS outing. Stories about things that happened on the course are a staple. Everyone loves a chuckle although a groan is sometimes more instructive.

Your story needn't be the absolute truth! Why not brag about a tricky hole or a great shot? Stretch the facts or share the pain?

Also, please feel free to submit an opinion or suggestion for improving MSIS events. Whatever you submit needn't be related to golf. All we need is a rough draft or a slim outline.
